Skyenet Community Broadband

Skyenet is a Sleat Community Trust project, working with a number of stakeholders including Community Broadband Scotland, Rural Broadband Networks, Highland Council, two local landowners as well as several common grazings committees and private individuals. 

The service is currently available in Aird, Achnacloich, Tarskavaig, Tokavaig, Ord, Heaste, Drumfearn, Drinan and Glasnakille.

We don't often show the network mapped out, but here it is (minus Aird). Originally we had a mast on Rum, and we built the Loch Dougal mast (second bottom) to replace this, which is our only off-grid site. The network hasn't changed layout other than that since we built it in 2015. We plug into the West Highland Internet Exchange (WHIX) at the two most easterly points on the map, Mallaig and Beinn Mhialairigh; where we hand over to a company called HUBS who take us down to Edinburgh, to one of the big Internet Exchanges in Scotland. We are expecting some planned maintenance works upstream of us from 2200 this evening until 0600. We've just been told about the work. It might not cause too much disruption, but you can expect the service to be unstable after 10pm.
